A short introduction by Dave Hill to launch the page is shown below.

I began as a trainspotter in 1956 near Longbridge (Birmingham) and was fed a diet mainly of Jubilees, 5's, 8F's & 9F's.
In the late 50's I joined various locospotters Clubs to undertake day/weekend trips to visit depots.
c1964 I started to travel more by train and joined various groups of enthusiasts in travelling mainly around
NW, N Wales, Yorkshire & Scotland.

Company included Keith Widdowson - article in Steam Railway (442) & recent books on his travels in the 60's,
Chris Magner who plied the North Wales Saturday (steam hauled) trains pushing a tea trolley, John Hobbs from Prestatyn along with
Ray Trader from Manchester who published "The tales of a 1960's Steam Traveller" detailing travelling experiences in
1965 - 68 mainly in the North West. (ISBN 1-84401-637-4)

I took whatever photos I could whilst changing/waiting for the next steam, subsequently
chasing Steam specials around the UK.

As can be seen from my log above, on August 7th 1965 I arrived at Prestatyn from Chester on 45449 and left there on 44838.

Those expert in Black 5's may be able to tell if the photo below showing a Black Five at Prestatyn on that date, was either of those.

It looks more like an arriving train 44838 that I may have dashed over to catch but could have been any other Black Five on that day.

Can anyone help?

Below is a further log of trains, locomotives, dates and locations recorded in 1966.

The 16.30 Manchester Exchange to Llandudno at Manchester is shown below.

As it is a Caprotti Standard 5 I suspect that it is 73141 on 29th August 1966 which I caught to Warrington after arriving from Llandudno with 45647 (see above log).
That seems most likely as I was using colour film that day. The other possible would be 73144 on 11th June 1966 on same train.

This next view is at Colwyn Bay and looking west towards Llandudno, and is probably 73006 on 04.06.06 or 73157 on 10.09.66 (see above logs).

Matching my travels to photographs I note that on 20.08.66 I travelled on the SO (Saturday Only) Leeds - Llandudno from
Huddersfield to Chester (not publicly due to stop at Chester) with Jubilee 45647 "Sturdee".
This shot below shows the train arriving at Huddersfield.

From Chester I went to Warrington, and not along the coast (hence no more logs submitted that day).

Britannia Class 70039 "Sir Christopher Wren " on July 3rd 1965 leaving Chester for Llandudno.
I had thought that this was on the Leeds - Llandudno (SO) but as Jubilee Class 45562 "Alberta" was also at
Llandudno that day that would probably have brought in the Leeds working so this was definitely not the Leeds working
so I am not sure what this train was.

A possible answer to the puzzle of the above train is put forward by Russell Saxton in the following email.

Hi, On your site there is a shot of 70039 (above) at Chester en route for Llandudno on July 3rd 1965.

The working is unidentified but I think I may know. We went for a family holiday to Llandudno from Derby.
We were diesel hauled to Crewe and there
70039 was put on through to Llandudno.

I don't know the exact date but it was around then, within weeks,  and I suspect that was the occasion as 70039 was very clean.
it didn't have its
nameplates on and my grandad asked what the loco was.

I can't be sure it was definitely that day but the rough month and same year and definitely a Saturday so the odds are high it was the train.

Be nice to put a date to it after all these years if it was.

Russell Saxton.
